On 4 and 5 April 2017, a project on “Introduction and Maintenance of Solar System” was conducted for the indigenous, off-grid community at Sungai Tiang Village, Royal Belum, Perak. The project is one of the activities under the NBOS, UCTC-UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) initiatives headed by Dr. Mohd Nabil Muhtazaruddin of UTM Razak School, Kuala Lumpur and assisted by Dr. Jasrul Jamani Jamian of UTM Johor Bahru and other facilitators from UTM. This project is part of UTM’s initiatives in introducing the community to the use of solar energy through the “PV-Edukit – UTM” programme. During the project, the villagers were introduced to solar energy and were given opportunities to conduct experiments to understand the operation of a solar system. The facilitators and the villagers also had a chance to conduct checks on the currently available, yet malfunctioned solar system at the village to determine the cause of failure. It is through this project that UTM hopes to equip the villagers with the basic knowledge to identify problems in a solar system.
